The lake has a maximum depth of 5 feet and is part of the Fox–Wisconsin Waterway.

Historically, French explorer Jacques Marquette passed through the lake in 1673, describing it as being filled with wild rice. Today, Lake Puckaway offers seven public boat landings, making it a great spot for boating, fishing, and wildlife watching.
