We would like to share with you some of my favorite Wisconsin Dells attractions that are no more. Let’s reflect, reminisce, and share.
The Wonder Spot
The Wonder Spot lasted from 1949 to 2006 and was advertised as the place “Where the laws of gravity seem to be repealed.” Visitors would walk down a ravine-trail into a cabin and that’s where the fun started. No one seemed to be standing up straight, water flowed backwards, and chairs balanced perfectly on two legs.
While guides would often state that the curious effects were due to igneous rock formations, the truth was that the cabin was built perpendicular to the hillside and the effects were merely an optical illusion. An optical illusion that we just couldn’t get enough of.
The Xanadu House
The Xanadu House was as much an attraction as it was a look at the reality of the future. These homes were a series of experimental houses built to showcase the house of the future. With unique construction and design techniques the homes – across three states (Florida, Wisconsin, and Tennessee) – were made of polyurethane insulation foam making them energy efficient and cost-effective.
As futuristic as they looked the Xanadu homes didn’t last very long, though there are now numerous construction companies building houses off the success of Xanadu today. In its first year, 1979, the Wisconsin Dells Xanadu Home had over 4,000 sq. ft., featured a geodesic greenhouse, meditation room, and had over 100,000 visitors that first year. By the 1990s the now obsolete design resulted in the demolition of the Dells Xanadu, quickly followed by the other two.
Enchanted Forest and Prehistoric Land
The Enchanted Forest and Prehistoric Land were one of the most popular Wisconsin Dells attractions and often on the list of the most missed family adventures. Located where the Timber Falls Mini-Golf is. Exciting and fun, the Enchanted Forest brought people back to the prehistoric ages with moving dinosaur features, a playland, and a Flintstones-style park.
Fort Dells
Fort Dells was Wisconsin’s competition to Disney’s Frontierland. Opened in 1959, Fort Dells was one of the busiest attractions until it closed in 1985. Generations were able to enjoy the playland and bring nostalgia that families still reminisce about today. A haunted house, railroad, and a cast of interactive characters provided a wealth of entertainment for all ages.
The now defunct Fort Dells has a commemorative sign at the old location and the property is home to a Walgreens and McDonalds.
