Adeline’s Story was passed down from generation to generation. She was a very old and sweet lady—so sweet that there’s no way her stories could be true, but here it goes.
Very early on, after Adeline’s father was killed in the Civil War, Adeline was left to manage the family farm with her mother and sister not far from where Adeline’s House stands today.
Around this time, she fell in love with a handsome, silver-tongued man named Half Pint Harry. Adeline fell head over heels for the man; unfortunately, Half Pint Harry was a sweet-talking con man, and he ended up stealing all of her hard-earned money and selling her farm, leaving Adeline completely destitute. Not one to take that type of treatment from anyone, she chased down her former lover with a shotgun and ended him.
In need of money, she began to set up gambling tables in the Town of Marquette Wisconsin. Back in the day, Marquette was quite the bustling town. The Fox River was a major form of transportation that runs directly through the middle of Lake Puckaway and made frequent stops in town.
Like any true entrepreneur, Adeline saw opportunity wherever she went. She opened several successful gaming parlors in and around Green Lake County, offering a rarity at the time: a respectable lady dealer.
Her parlors were finely furnished, served Champagne instead of whiskey, and only accepted the patronage of well-dressed gentlemen. It was hugely popular, but men lost interest as Adeline’s beauty waned and more women began filling the area’s Bordellos, taverns, and gambling houses.
Sometime before prohibition the towns around Marquette and Green Lake started to run dry and the crowds cleared out, it’s about that time when Adeline bought the boarding house known today as Adeline’s House of Cool.
Adeline’s promises its patrons “The Three D’s—Dining, Drinking, and Dancing” and calls itself “a place where you can bring your mother.”
Local ladies of the evening would head down on Saturdays to enjoy Ms. Adeline’s Tipsy Tea party.
Today, the house looks quiet and unassuming, but 100 years ago, it was one of the most popular brothels in central Wisconsin.
You cannot deny that old Adeline was ambitious and an extraordinary entrepreneur who made the most of the hand she was dealt. Despite being a classy lady, she was no pushover and was known to chase law enforcers off her property with a broom.
At the start of the 20th Century in 1919, the US government passed legislation criminalizing the creation and sale of alcohol, which went on to last for 13 years.
Bootlegging was rife, and the country witnessed a surge in organized crime as a corrupt police force turned a blind eye to the growing mafia mayhem, frequently profiting from the illegal industry themselves.
Described as a “hidden slice of old-school glamour” you will discover a world of illicit indulgence
As one of central Wisconsin’s lesser-known speakeasies. Adeline’s House was once a popular spot for many notorious names to kick back and relax. A favorite rest spot and hideout of Al Capone, this establishment became a gangster hangout thanks to the low key high stakes gambling taking place and a brothel upstairs.
Wisconsin was an easy escape for other Chicago’s mobster elite. Adeline’s place became popular with Bugs Moran, Baby Face Nelson, and John Dillinger’s gang members in the 1930s. The gangsters and their families spent so much time at the property that Adeline became close with Bugs Moran’s wife and remained friends long after their divorce.
While those days are long gone, Adeline’s House of Cool is still closely associated with the notorious gangsters. She treated them like VIPs, throwing them elaborate coming and going-away parties.
Situated near the middle of Green Lake County in Wisconsin is an ole country house speakeasy bar, Adeline’s Story includes serving booze (legally or illegally, depending on the year) since the early 1900s.
