Are family reunion resorts really a thing? I used to ask myself the same thing. And when I asked, the first response I received was, “Where do you think the movie Dirty Dancing took place?”

Family reunion resorts were popularized in the 1950s as families sought summer resorts to escape the bustle of everyday life. In Wisconsin, one of the first family resorts, Lawn Lake Resort, was established on Delavan Lake in 1879. In fact, it was one of the first vacation resorts in the entire United States.

Lawn Lake Resort wanted to capitalize on the natural beauty of Wisconsin and it sparked a wave of tourism ranging from the Apostle Islands and Door County in the north to Wisconsin Dells and lakeside cities such as Sheboygan and Kenosha.
